About

Epperson Mountaineering

Founded in 1973, Epperson Mountaineering was born from a simple but uncompromising idea: make the perfect backpack. Mark Epperson, a world-wise outdoorsman with a deep love for the mountains, set out to create packs that met his own demanding standards when none on the market would. Guided by a belief in premium materials, artisan craftsmanship, and thoughtful, functional design, Mark began an unending pursuit of quality that would come to define the brand.

The “Quest for the perfect pack”.

Word of Mark’s handmade backpacks quickly spread among local outdoor enthusiasts. As demand grew, he opened a small retail shop in Libby, Montana, where every pack was crafted by hand, one at a time. As production expanded Mark trained other skilled artisans to help bring his vision to life, ensuring that each bag reflected the same dedication to durability, precision, and purpose.

When Mark announced his retirement, the brand entered its next chapter through Yuki Matsuda. A longtime acquaintance and passionate rock climber, Yuki deeply respected the craftsmanship behind Epperson Mountaineering and was committed to preserving its legacy. Under his direction, the brand has continued to honor its original standards while evolving in form and style.

Today, Epperson Mountaineering blends its rugged, Montana-rooted heritage with modern influences drawn from rock climbing culture and fashion. While silhouettes and aesthetics have evolved, the commitment to quality remains unchanged. Each backpack and tote is still produced in small factories in the United States, upholding the same hands-on approach, careful construction, and attention to detail that defined the brand from the very beginning.
